Professional Practice at CAMH

Since the merger of the four founding organizations of CAMH, clinical services have been organized within a program management structure. There are currently twelve professional disciplines at CAMH.  All professional disciplines are organized into professional Councils and have a discipline chief. Each discipline chief sits on the Clinical Practice Council.  The Clinical Practice Council (CPC) is chaired by the Chief of Nursing and Professional Services, who sits on Senior Management at CAMH.  The Physician in Chief is a member of the CPC.

The CPC is comprised of all the Health Care Disciplines at CAMH.  These are the regulated professions recognized by the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Social Work and Social Service Worker Act, 1998, as well as unregulated professions.  The unregulated professions at CAMH are: Therapeutic Recreation, Addiction Therapy, Child and Youth Work, Spiritual and Religious Care, Vocational Services, Art Therapy, Music Therapy and Stress Management.  Art Therapy, Music Therapy and Stress Management are sub-groups of the Occupational Therapy Council.

The goals of the CPC are to:

  • Ensure standards of professional care based on evidence based best practices, and including relevant legislation and regulation are met by all professionals at CAMH
  • Build and disseminate knowledge about best practices and standards
  • Provide a forum to discuss and examine professional and clinical issues
  • Support recruitment of highly qualified and skilled staff
  • Support retention by creating the conditions for inclusion in professional practice councils and forums
  • Enhance the profile of CAMH in the academic community
  • Engage in, and support research
  • Facilitate collaboration and development of clinical services
  • Keep abreast of emerging issues and trends in health care and to ensure that practitioners have the requisite knowledge and skills to deal with them
  • Be a leader in the development of innovative clinical care
  • Facilitate practices that create healthy work environments
  • Be a leader in supporting quality improvement activities
